Large Screen Based Mediaphone

This paper summarizes our experience in developing software platform for a consumer Mediaphone with 1024x600 using Android 1.x/2.0 on an ARM cortex A8 based SoC.  Android default framework and user interface has been designed for small and midsized screens such as the ones present in today’s smart phones and do not suite well for large screen. It highlights the user interface customizations, framework enhancements, performance optimizations and hardware integration that had to be done to realize a large screen device solution. The challenges in integration of multimedia, VOIP, video communications and home networking have also been enumerated. Some of the strategies adopted for the improving the performance, applications, SDK and missing frameworks in default have been highlighted.
